Delbert C. Smith
Technical Sergeant Delbert C. Smith, 39166314 was a native of Anaheim, California.
He flew to Australia with Lieutenant William E. O’Brien in B-17F "Black Jack" 41-24521 and flew his first combat mission in late September 1942.
During the ditching of "Black Jack" he was the most seriously wounded, suffering a broken back and was evacuated first in a RAAF flying boat.
After ditching, he was awarded a second Air Medal Oak Leaf Cluster. Afterwards, he never returned to flying duty.
He died in Rogers, Arkansas on August 18, 1992. |
